Dear Nashoba Valley Chorale Singer – and potential singers!
Welcome to our 2019-2020 season! It’s going to be a humdinger. The fall promises to be full of a variety of fantastic music and experiences, and the spring has glorious Beethoven and, for those that wish, a trip to New York City.
We have been planning for some time for our December concerts (the MessiahSing and the Holiday Concert with the Worcester Youth Symphony Orchestra) and for our January 26 concert (note that it’s on Sunday afternoon), featuring music by Gjeilo and Haydn. The music for these performances will be fun and challenging, and it’s wonderful that we can continue to work with the young musicians of the WYO and the less-young musicians of the Orchestra at Indian Hill.
Recently we received an unexpected invitation to join the UMass Lowell choirs and the Cambridge Symphony Orchestra in two performances of John Adams’ Harmonium and Ludwig van Beethoven’s Choral Finale to the 9thSymphony. I think we cannot pass up this opportunity. Many of us have sung the Beethoven and it never gets old; it’s always a thrill to sing. The Adams piece is rarely performed (it calls for a mammoth orchestra), and this is our chance to sing a gorgeous and amazing piece of music. The choral music is orchestral in its nature, full of different timbres and effects along with beautiful settings of texts by John Donne and Emily Dickinson.
With all of this music to learn for November and January, I will:
- Make learning files of each vocal part
- Offer extra, optional, rehearsals, beginning in late September and going through October. These will be on Saturdays and Tuesdays.
After the holiday break, we’ll polish the music for the January 26 concert, then begin work for our April 18 performance. That concert is still in the planning stages, but we will definitely sing the wonderful Mass in C by Beethoven. Our soloists in that work will be the winners of our 3rd Emerging Artists Contest.
A fabulous event will occur in March – we have been invited (“In recognition of your dedication to musical excellence and due to the high quality of your audition recording” -!) by DCINY (Distinguished Concerts International New York) to participate in the performance of The Music of Ola Gjeilo. This performance is planned to take place on Monday, March 16, 2020 in Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts’ Alice Tully Hall, under the batons of Cameron LaBarr and Brian Schmidt. Composer Ola Gjeilo will be present as Composer-in-Residence and will play piano on the concert. I will bring a separate handout about this opportunity; in brief, each singer will pay a registration fee of $790, along with paying for their transportation and hotel (and, I would advise, trip insurance). DCINY has a travel agency that will help you, or you can make your own arrangements. The dates: arrive Friday March 13, rehearse March 14 and 15 (4 hours each day). More information to come!
An overview of our schedule, including dress rehearsals, is below – please put all of the dates in your calendar. And please know that, in those moments when it just seems like a lot (!): a) you are all capable of singing all of this beautifully, and b) this is mind-blowingly wonderful music.
Looking forward to another great season!
